Cogliano scores 2 in 3rd, Ducks beat Red Wings 5-2

DETROIT (AP) ? It was a game of turnovers. The Detroit Red Wings made them and the Anaheim Ducks took advantage.

Andrew Cogliano and Bobby Ryan scored less than a minute apart early in the third period, and Cogliano added an empty-net goal in Anaheim's 5-2 victory Friday night.

Viktor Fasth made 26 saves to become the first goalie in seven years to win his first seven career starts. The 30-year-old Fasth is considered a first-year player and not a rookie by the NHL because he is older than 25.

"He's been our most valuable player," Ryan said. "He has come in and given us a chance to win every game. He's a true professional."

Cogliano snapped a 2-all tie just 1:02 into the third and Ryan connected 48 seconds later. Both goals were the result of neutral-zone turnovers by Red Wings defensemen.

Niklas Kronwall turned it over on Cogliano's goal, and Ian White committed the gaffe on Ryan's tally ? his second turnover of the game that led to a goal.

"When they do make mistakes, you have to make sure you capitalize," said Cogliano, who capped the outburst with his fourth of the season at 18:11.

Matt Beleskey and Corey Perry each had a goal and an assist for Anaheim, which won its third straight and seventh in eight games. Ryan Getzlaf added two assists.

Joakim Andersson got his first career goal and added an assist, and Tomas Tatar also scored for Detroit, which was without top-six forwards Pavel Datsyuk (bruised shoulder day- to-day) and Johan Franzen, who missed his second game because of a sore hip flexor. Jimmy Howard stopped 33 shots.

"It was two turnovers that ended up in our net. It was tough. I think we, until that time, played a good game," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "We battled good the first period and took over the game in the second. We felt good going out for the third but unfortunately those two quick ones kind of killed the game."

Cogliano and Ryan scored 48 seconds apart early in the third period.

Cogliano tipped in a pass from Saku Koivu off a give-and-go play, and Ryan fired in his own rebound for his fifth goal at 1:50.

Perry capitalized on a turnover in the Detroit zone by putting in his own rebound 7:32 into the second period to tie the score at 2. White fanned on a pass from behind his own net and the puck went to Beleskey, who made a cross-slot pass to Perry.

Tatar's power-play goal gave Detroit a 2-1 lead 6:32 into the middle period. He put in a rebound for his second goal, both in the last two games.

Andersson opened the scoring 3:01 into the second by beating Fasth from the bottom of the right circle. Beleskey tied it 26 seconds later with his second goal. He beat Howard with a snap shot from the slot.

The first period was scoreless as Anaheim outshot the Red Wings 14-6.

Bill AB266 could extend HOV lane access for green cars by 10 years in California

One of the most sought after incentives for green(er) cars in California are the white, green and yellow stickers that give access to the high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane even if you don't have the required number of passengers. The yellow sticks (shown above) that were once given to the most fuel-efficient hybrids expired in 2011, but the white stickers for electric, natural gas, and hydrogen vehicles are still offered, though time is running out. If nothing is done, the program will expire on January 1, 2015, and then it's "bye bye" carpool lane.

California Assemblyman Bob Blumenfield doesn't want to see that happen. He introduced a bill called AB266 that would extend by 10 years the duration of the HOV sticker program to January 1, 2025.

Under the current program, "white" stickers are given to zero-emission vehicles that include all battery electric vehicles as well as natural-gas and hydrogen powered vehicles, while "green" stickers are given to plug-in hybrids and range-extended electric cars that have both battery propulsion and a gasoline engine.

This extension would be a relatively low-cost way for California to not only improve the state's vehicle fleet, but also to help the development of green(er) vehicles. The hardest thing with a new technology is to get through the early low-volume high-price phase; once that's over, you get economies of scale and incremental technological improvements to help you reduce cost, which means that a lot more people can afford to buy your products. By making plug-ins more attractive to Californians, this would help the whole industry keep moving toward EV and PHEVs that are more affordable and better -- battery technology will no doubt keep improving, as will power electronics and software, and fast-charging stations will pop all over, making even long trips easy.

Contraception: A Cruel Master : IgnitumToday

I?ve grown quite weary of listening to Cecile Richards and Kathleen Sebelius drone on about their supposed concern for my ?reproductive choices? and my ?health care?. Haven?t you? They remind me of?those little dolls I used to play with as a child?the dolls that came with a string attached that, when pulled, would play a recorded message like ?feed me? or ?I need a drink of water.? The messages never changed and, after awhile, I lost interest and stopped pulling the string.

The big difference here is painfully obvious; these media dolls have the ability to pull their own strings.

It is a curious and frustrating thing that for two bright and well-educated women, in their overwhelming concern for women?s ?health care? and their tireless (and well paid) work on behalf of ?women?s issues?, they appear incapable of envisioning a solution that doesn?t revolve around abortion and contraception.

It?s as if they have never met an abortion they couldn?t profit from, nor a contraceptive they couldn?t wait to peddle.

Equally frustrating are the endless (and ridiculous) birth control commercials.? I have many friends who use various types of contraception.? None of them, not one, wakes up in the?morning like the images portrayed in the media.?? Far from jumping into pools with each other with cute little swimsuits on and singing stupid songs about the days of the week, the lives of actual women who use contraception look very different from those singing, robotic women on television.

Oh, I?ve seen them all: the patch, the shot, the pill,?the diaphragm, the implants, the shield, the rings, etc.? Enough already!?? If empowerment is realized by turning ourselves into nothing more than human rats for pharmaceutical companies, by conditioning women to become more excited about a proposed ring to stick up our vaginas than to put on our fingers, then ladies, we have been grievously betrayed.

Advertisements filled with giggly girls, running around in pink polka-dotted outfits and flowing skirts completely unable to hide their absolute joy and excitement at being tossed yet another contraption to stuff up themselves is nothing more than pharmaceutical porn.?? In reality, contraception is something women have been saddled with, not something they have been empowered by.

The women I?ve known are more likely to resemble the other birth control commercials, the sequels.?? These sequels are hard to miss and they usually start out something like this: ?Have you or anyone you know used the drug ?Spaz? within the last 12 months? Do you suffer from strokes, blood clots, heart attacks? . . .? and then continue with a list of side effects a mile long, so terrible, that only a contraceptive for women would be deemed worthy of that kind of risk.

Class action lawsuits have a funny way of ripping the mask right off the ?birth control as health care? mantra, exposing a very hideous face.? Jumping into pools and skipping around on pink sidewalks is hardly possible when you?re lying in a hospital bed suffering from a recent stroke, a ?negative side-effect? from your ?health care?.

So many women I have known are hesitant to speak aloud what has only been expressed in the silence of their own hearts. The truth? Many would be happy to end their dependence on artificial birth control but are concerned that the men in their lives would become upset and it would have a ripple effect of negative consequences so daunting that it becomes too overwhelming to even consider.

With all our talk of empowerment, liberation, and advancement for women,?we seem unable to free ourselves from the shackles of dangerous chemicals, implantation devices, and shots for our bodies filled with the latest batch of hormonal drugs.? It is hard to fathom that in a day and age where women are at the top of every societal structure and status, we continue to value the integrity and health of our chickens? bodies more than we value the integrity and health of our own.

Thanks to organizations like Planned Parenthood, fertility has been likened to a disease and contraception and abortion are the cures. Under the banner of ?reproductive choice?, women put their bodies and their emotions through hell on a daily basis for precisely what they feel they do not have?a choice.? Fertility and family planning have been successfully defined as a burden: a burden that has been placed squarely on the shoulders of women. It has been made ours, and ours alone to bear?or abort.

Welcome to your empowerment. It?s hardly recognizable.

Sexual love speaks a beautiful language of unity and the vehicle for this expression of love is our bodies.?? When we invite contraception into the conversation, it?s like talking to that annoying guy at the party; we will soon find ourselves being constantly interrupted.

Contraception screams a self-loathing message.? It says to women that in our most natural and healthy state there is something wrong with us, so wrong that it should be withheld.?? Its abusive message conditions us to believe that we are undeserving of being loved in our fullness and are only desirable in parts.

I reject the attempts of those who slyly wrap this message in the cloak of liberation and empowerment for women while always with an eye toward Planned Parenthood?s bottom line.? I resent my body being used as a pawn for their agenda, their profits, and their politics and I am deeply insulted by the constant obsession of those in our government attempting to pass off harmful chemicals, devices, and drugs as ?health care? for women when it would be unthinkable to pull this same kind of bait-and-switch stunt on men.

The inherent anti-woman message of contraception reeks of a familiar and deceptive stench.

The Catholic Church recognizes in women what their own boyfriends and husbands sometimes fail to see and it is pleased to have a?message for women that Planned Parenthood never will; you are a gift, not just?the convenient parts, not just the parts that make others happy or give others?pleasure, but all of you. Your fertility is not a disease to be cured but was lovingly designed in the mind of God.??You were created for love and when you give the gift of?your body in that love, it is worthy of being received?in its entirety.

I won?t use contraception because my body and my sexuality are gifts (and my husband?s are pretty nice too).? I won?t use contraception because when I give myself to my husband in love, I want it to be a total giving and a total receiving, nothing withheld, nothing unworthy of being shared.

We use Natural Family Planning because love was designed to be expressed without interruption.

Blessed Pope John Paul II, in his Letter to Women, wrote beautifully about the ?unity of the two? which ?enables each to experience their interpersonal and reciprocal relationship as a gift.?? On this Valentine?s Day, I hope your marital relationship is experienced as that true gift. ?The time has come to embrace a message of empowerment truly deserving of being repeated, and one we should never grow tired of hearing; we are worthy of being loved?in our entirety.

19 Year Old Sets Himself On Fire At Rome Airport

The series of tragic European self-immolations continues, this time from Rome airport in front of hundreds of people, where moments ago Sky News reports, a 19-year-old man from the Ivory Coast, due for deportation, set himself on fire. From Sky: " The 19-year-old man, from the Ivory Coast, doused himself in petrol and set himself on fire in front of dozens of travellers and workers at Fiumicino airport, 10 miles west of the Italian capital. Police said he arrived at the departures area of the airport's terminal three with a deportation order, and had been due to leave Italy. But as he spoke to police he suddenly pulled out a plastic bottle of petrol, tipped it over himself and ran off through the terminal. Officers gave chase, but he then used a lighter to ignite the fuel in front of stunned passengers.... A spokesman for the Italian Refugee Council confirmed that the man had arrived in Italy from Holland earlier this week and had tried to claim asylum but had been denied and was ordered out of the country. He had been due to board a flight to Amsterdam when he set fire to himself. The spokesman added: "One can only imagine the desperation and frustration he must have faced to carry out such an act." Sadly, since this is hardly the last episode of people self-immolating out of desperation in Europe (and elsewhere), perhaps it is about time the centralized government of the world finally banned lighter fluid. And matches. And lighters.

Minnesotans who want to hear an authentic sampling of Hawaii's rich musical heritage can enjoy the work of the Lau Hawaiian Collective. The five-member band from St. Paul, co-founded by vocalist Kim Sueoka and guitarist David Burk, has found receptive listeners thousands of miles from the islands. We caught up with them at a recent rehearsal.

2013 NFL Offseason Team Needs: Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars will pick 2nd in the 2013 NFL Draft, and there are a variety of very good reasons for that. They were so awful last season that they fired former head coach Mike Mularkey after just one season, and they brought in completely new management.

Jacksonville even decided to rid itself of its old logo, and get a completely new look.

Let?s face it?the Jaguars are probably going to have another down year in 2013. Their roster is just a mess right now, and they are going to need some serious re-tooling all across the board. Their offense and defense both ranked 30th in the NFL last season, so when the new league year begins, you can expect some major changes for Gus Bradley and the Jaguars.

Here are Jacksonville?s top team needs, in no particular order.

1. Pass Rush

The Jaguars aren?t getting anywhere anytime soon without a pass rush. They managed 20 sacks all of last season, which was worst in the NFL. That?s an incredible stat when you really think about it. They were barely able to muster up one sack per game, and an additional sack every fourth game. Jacksonville luckily is in position to grab one of the top pass rushers in the draft, and it looks like it will be hard for them to get their first pick wrong in that regard. There are a variety of guys they could take that would upgrade their pass rush situation, and there are also some interesting young names on the free agent market.

2. Quarterback

The Jaguars will be moving on from Blaine Gabbert soon enough if he can?t prove he was worthy of a top 15 draft selection this year. Chad Henne is a serviceable starter for a team with no aspirations of making the playoffs. I think Jacksonville needs to look in the 2nd round to pick up a quarterback like Matt Barkley or Landry Jones, maybe a guy like E.J. Manuel to have for the future of the franchise. This is not a good draft for quarterbacks, but it wouldn?t hurt to use a pick on a signal caller who has potential to be ?the guy? for this team. That?s got to be a high priority for the new regime in JAX.

3. Guard

Jacksonville desperately needs an upgrade at the guard position. Will Rackley was awful as a rookie and missed 2012 with an injury, so he will be expected to compete for a starting job but I don?t think you can really count on him if you?re the Jaguars. Maybe you have no other choice. Eben Britton is not a fit at the LG position either. They need an upgrade on the interior offensive line.

4. Center

Brad Meester is a free agent and 36 years old. The center market is not strong this year, so the Jags may have to get creative. Maybe they could get lucky and find a guy like Barrett Jones sitting there with their second round pick, but otherwise, it?s pretty slim pickings. Perhaps Meester will come back for a year or so if he?s not ready to call it quits this offseason.

5. Cornerback

This is another desperation area for the Jags with three of their top four players at the position set to hit free agency. Rashean Mathis, Derek Cox, and William Middleton are all free agents this offseason, and the Jaguars have nothing waiting in the wings. Cox should be a priority to bring back, but I think Mathis has probably played his last game as a Jaguar. He will likely look to play for a title contender in 2013. This is a deep position this year, so they should be able to get some talented players in free agency and the draft.

6. Wide Receiver

I think the Jaguars have struck gold?finally?with Justin Blackmon and Cecil Shorts, who are only going to get better if you ask me. That said, Laurent Robinson was a terrible free agent acquisition and is contemplating retirement because of concussions. They need more talent at this position to surround their young quarterback, whether it?s Blaine Gabbert or someone else.

7. Running Back

Maurice Jones-Drew might not be a Jaguar much longer, and the team struggled to replace him last season. As little as he played (86 carries) he still managed to lead the team in rushing. You will probably see the Jags add some more talent at this position this offseason.

8. Outside Linebacker

I think Daryl Smith will be retained, but the way he has played the last few years, you have to wonder if he?ll be too pricey for the Jaguars. If he is, OLB becomes a huge need, even though they should seek some depth anyway.
