Kenny Perry shoots 63 to win US Senior Open

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Kenny Perry is getting the hang of these majors. He only wishes it had happened sooner.

Perry completed a masterful performance with a 7-under 63 on Sunday that gave him a five-shot win over Fred Funk in the U.S. Senior Open.

The 52-year-old Kentuckian won his second straight senior major with a flurry. His 64-63 finish and the 10-shot deficit he overcame after 36 holes set tournament records. His 13-under total of 267 matched the lowest four-round score.

"It all came together. Why, after all these years?" Perry said. "Here I am, (almost) 53 years old, and it finally came together for me."

On the regular tour, Perry won 14 times but was best known for collapses in the 2009 Masters and 1996 PGA Championship. Those memories haunted him again in May when he squandered a three-shot lead with six holes to play in the Senior PGA Championship and lost by two to Kohki Idoki.

Just as he did two weeks ago in the Senior Players Championship at Fox Chapel, Pa., where he won by two shots over Fred Couples and Duffy Waldorf, Perry came from well behind to win in the hills and heat at the par-70 Omaha Country Club.

"This is by far the biggest tournament I ever won," Perry said. "I lost the playoff at the Master's and the PGA playoff. I didn't get the job done. Now to have a USGA title, it's an Open, it's our Open, it's what the players play for.

"To finally get it, even though it's a Senior Open, I still regard it as a very high honor."

Perry, who started Sunday two shots behind leader Michael Allen, was in front to stay after he birdied the second and third holes and Allen bogeyed the third.

Perry's 63 matched Allen's Friday score for best round of the tournament and was the best ever in a U.S. Senior Open final round.

"He put it to us," Funk said. "Six under yesterday, seven today, back-to-back. It's kind of what he did two weeks ago at Fox Chapel. He just smoked the field on the weekend. He just lapped us."

Perry made par over the last three holes. A wide smile crossed his face as he tapped in for par on 18. He dropped his putter, raised both arms and waved his visor to the gallery.

Perry is the ninth player to win consecutive senior majors. He said he wouldn't go for three in a row. He's staying home to rest rather than play the British Senior Open in two weeks.

Perry had six birdies and one bogey on his way to a 5-under 30 on the front nine Sunday. He started a run of four straight birdies when he blasted out of the sand to within 5 feet on No. 6.

By the time he made the turn, he was three shots ahead of the fading Allen.

Things momentarily got interesting when Rocco Mediate made a 10-foot putt on No. 15 for his third straight birdie to get within two shots. Over on the par-5 14th, Perry was buried in the left rough. He chipped into the fairway and was left with 130 yards to the pin.

He knocked his wedge within a foot, yelling "Be right" as his ball plopped onto the green and rolled toward the cup. After the tap-in, another birdie on No. 15 and Mediate's bogey on 16, Perry's lead was up to five and he was well on his way to his fourth win since he joined the Champions Tour in 2010.

Perry said Mediate's late run helped him keep his focus.

"I was like, 'Oh, oh, we've got to keep going. We've got to put the hammer down and work on out,' " Perry said. "Sometimes when you get leads, you kind of hang onto that lead. I didn't want that cushion. I wanted to push it on out there. I wanted a five-shot lead coming down to the last hole."

Funk, the 2009 champion, was runner-up for the second straight year and third time since 2008. He was tied with Perry after the third round but couldn't make much headway, shooting a final-round 68.

Mediate (66) and Corey Pavin (67) tied for third at 7-under 273.

The 54-year-old Allen needed acupuncture treatments for a pinched nerve in his neck to be able to play the last three rounds. His five-shot lead through 36 holes was the largest in tournament history. He followed his course-record 63 on Friday with a pair of 72s that left him in fifth place.

"Today's round was probably the greatest round I've ever played," Perry said. "I just was spot on with all my irons. I putted like Ben Crenshaw. It's just been a remarkable month. I've had a great run."

Gigahertz, megapixels, and millimeters - do specs matter at all? - Talk Mobile

There are three major elements to the smartphone experience. The hardware, the software, and the services. Software comprises the virtual; it is the operating system and the apps. Services is a bit broader, but it includes cloud connections like backup and app stores as well as the cellular connection provided by the carrier.

Hardware is a different beast. Software and services are ephemeral. You cannot pick up and hold a strong LTE signal. It's energy, it's bits and bytes. Hardware is the physical. It's the device itself. It's the case, the display, the touchscreen, the buttons, the speakers, the microphones, the radios, the processor, the memory, the storage, the sensors, the cameras, the ports, the battery, and everything else that goes into physically building the device.

Hardware is what enables the software and services. Without the hardware, the software couldn't happen. Conversely, without the software and services, the hardware would merely be a fancy paperweight. So just how important is hardware? Do the specs matter, or is it what you can do with the specs that's important? Should we compromise quality for price? And when is it time to put old tech out to pasture?

Undiagnosed pre-diabetes highly prevalent in early Alzheimer's disease study

[unable to retrieve full-text content]When a neurologist began enrolling people with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease into a nationwide study last year, he expected to find only a handful of participants with undiagnosed glucose intolerance, as all the patients were already under a doctor's care and those with known diabetes were excluded. But the scientists said he was "shocked" by how many study participants were found to have pre-diabetes -- a finding that is triggering important questions.

Uncouth? There's more to 'Honey Boo Boo'

TV

Image: Here Comes Honey Boo Boo

TLC

It's that time again! Time for another season of mud floppin', sketti eating and, evidently, a new horror called a "cup-a-fart." Yes, "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" is back -- or it will be back in just a few more days.

That's good news for some reality TV fans as Alana "Honey Boo Boo" Thompson and her oh-so-quotable family make for must-see TV for them. For others? Well, let's just say those who don't watch the show are just as passionate when it comes to how they feel about the gang from McIntyre, Ga. -- maybe even more so.

Critics of the show often accuse the production of exploiting its subjects, as if the family isn't "in on the joke" of their own behavior. They've pointed to "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" as evidence of the dumbing down of America, called it crude, uncivilized entertainment.

Some find fault with the show's kiddie-pageant, "Toddlers & Tiaras" roots, and they find the young star at the center of it all -- known for her sassy quips and ability to play to the cameras -- to be more problematic than precocious.

But the truth is many of those same critics are making big assumptions, many of which just don't apply to this bunch.

It's not that Mama June, Sugar Bear and the rest are really high-brow folks in disguise. They're guilty of being exactly who they are. But just because their idea of fun is usually silly, free and undeniably gross (see "cup-a-fart," above) doesn't mean they don't bring anything of value to the small screen.

Those who've only seen promos and sneak peeks might miss "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo's" real appeal. Hidden somewhere in between the easy laughs and the ridiculous situations are a couple of surprises.

For one thing, this family doesn't fit any stereotype. Say what you will about their mud-loving ways, their road-kill menu or even their ample waistlines -- and many non-fans say quite a bit about those things -- but this family will let it roll right off. They're truly comfortable with who they are.

And it seems they want others to feel that way too. Mama June and the girls often host fundraisers to benefit anti-bullying campaigns. In fact, the whole family is vocal in their enthusiasm about acceptance, whether they mean acceptance for themselves, their extended family -- including a gay, HIV-positive uncle who's sometimes part of the show -- or those from all walks of life in their own community.

Their other charm is simple: love. Sure, that might sound a little too twee to be true, but that's really what makes "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" work beyond the obvious gags. The hijinks would get old if that's all that brought these people together. But it's not.

The bizarre is always balanced with what counts: hugging, laughing and getting along better than almost any family you could find on the small screen and better than many you could find off-screen.

See for yourself when "Here Comes Honey Boo Boo" returns to TLC July 17 at 9 p.m.

Travis sedated, in critical condition after surgery

Grammy-winning country music singer Randy Travis is still in critical condition following emergency surgery earlier this week, after suffering a stroke in a Texas hospital, his spokesman said on Friday.

"Mr. Randy Travis has been under heavy sedation since he came out of surgery late Wednesday night, July 10th, and is resting comfortably. He is still in critical condition," Travis' publicist Kirt Webster said in a statement.

Travis, 54, underwent a procedure to relieve pressure on the brain at the Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, located north of Dallas, on Wednesday. He had been admitted to hospital last week for a heart condition caused by a virus.

A six-time Grammy award winner known for hits such as "Forever and Ever, Amen" and "Three Wooden Crosses," Travis has received an outpouring of support from country music stars and his fans.

Webster said Travis' family continued to ask for prayers and support as he recovers.

Equity/Debt Capital Markets/Custody Lawyer 3-5 PQE - Investment Bank ? In-House

The custody, fund and trust administration business of this leading bank covers custody, fund administration, alternative investment and operational services on behalf of thousands of issuers and institutional investors across the globe; sovereign wealth funds, pension funds, hedge funds and central banks. The bank has seen an increase in demand for custody products, particularly in the EMEA region and where they relate to the increased activities of funds (sovereign wealth, pension, mutual and alternative investment funds). This growth has created a new opportunity for a lawyer to sit with the custody and fund administration legal group in London.

You will work closely with the business lines throughout the EMEA region and with colleagues in other parts of the bank as well as external clients, providing advice on legal and documentation issues on a very wide range of issues but focussing on the issues facing the custody, trust and fund services businesses.

The group is seeking a lawyer with 3 -5 years PQE; you will ideally be a lawyer currently focussed on custody related issues sitting in another financial institution but given the specialised nature of the post and the small number of lawyers who focus on this area across the City, the group will also consider an experienced securities/capital markets lawyer with strong documentation skills. Good knowledge of securities laws and financing arrangements (for example; a knowledge of charges, liens, set off rights and security interests) are important and if you are coming from a law firm, secondment experience in a financial institution will be important. Knowledge of securities settlement systems and asset servicing would be favourably regarded.?

A strong securities/ECM/DCM background, good corporate documentation drafting and negotiation skills and solid training at a recognised ?home? are essential. UK admission is preferred. You should have an eye to the risks involved in new products and an ability to be robust when advising internal clients and negotiating with external parties and be able to work effectively and build relationships with external counsel.

A genuinely rare opportunity in this market for a capital markets lawyer to move in-house to a leading financial institution within a part of the bank that is growing and enjoying continued investment. ?

(AP) ? Edward Snowden emerged from weeks of hiding in a Moscow airport Friday, still defiant but willing to stop leaking secrets about U.S. surveillance programs if Russia will give him asylum until he can move on to Latin America.

Snowden's meeting with Russian officials and rights activists cleared up uncertainty about where the former National Security Agency systems analyst is, but left open the big question: What comes next?

Snowden said he was ready to meet President Vladimir Putin's condition that he stop leaking secrets if it means Russia would give him shelter that could eventually help him get to Latin America. There was no immediate response from Putin's office, but speakers of both houses of the Kremlin-controlled parliament spoke in support of Snowden's plea.

Vyacheslav Nikonov, a senior lawmaker with the main Kremlin party, described Snowden as "a bit nervous but smiling" and noted his "perfect haircut." He said that when asked to describe his stay at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport, Snowden answered with one word: "Safe."

Snowden is believed to have been stuck in the airport's transit zone since his arrival on June 23 from Hong Kong, where he had gone before his revelations were made public. He booked a seat on a Cuba-bound flight the next day, but did not get on the plane and had remained out of the public eye until Friday.

Putin has said Snowden stayed in the transit zone and thus technically didn't cross the Russian border. He also insisted that Russian special services haven't contacted the NSA leaker ? a claim that drew skeptical winks from some security analysts who noted that Russian intelligence agencies would be all too eager to learn the secrets in his possession.

Sergei Nikitin of Amnesty International's Moscow office said that plainclothes men who looked like officers of Russian special services attended the meeting, which was held in a cordoned section of a corridor. The exact location was unclear as hundreds of journalists were left in a hallway outside the meeting area, behind a gray door marked "staff only."

Nikitin said participants were asked not to take photos and video. "Snowden himself requested that, saying his pictures would give too much information to the U.S. special services," Nikitin said.

Human Rights Watch's Tanya Lokshina posted a photo of Snowden at the gathering on her Facebook page, the first new image of him since the Guardian newspaper broke the story of widespread U.S. Internet surveillance based on his leaks.

A brief video of the meeting's opening also appeared on the Russian news site Life News, showing Snowden speaking, then being interrupted by a flight announcement on the airport's public address system.

"I've heard that a lot in the past weeks," Snowden said, smiling ironically.

In an opening statement released by the secret-spilling group WikiLeaks that adopted his case, Snowden said he wanted to accept all asylum offers and travel to the countries that have made them "to extend my personal thanks to their people and leaders."

He also denounced the United States for what he said was pressuring its allies to block him from their airspace. Snowden could be hoping that Washington would not risk trying to block a flight he was on if he had Russian asylum.

In the short term, he could also be seeking asylum in Russia simply as a way to get out of the airport and move freely.

Snowden made an initial bid for Russian asylum, but Putin said he would have to agree to stop leaking secrets before the request would be considered. Snowden then withdrew his bid.

Venezuela, Bolivia and Nicaragua recently have offered Snowden asylum, but it is unclear if he could fly to any of those countries from Moscow without passing through the airspace of the United States or its allies. Some European countries reportedly refused to allow Bolivia's President Evo Morales to fly through their airspace on his way home from Moscow last week because of suspicions that Snowden was on his plane.

"I ask for your assistance in requesting guarantees of safe passage from the relevant nations in securing my travel to Latin America, as well as requesting asylum in Russia until such time as these states accede to law and my legal travel is permitted," Snowden said in his statement.

Snowden also defended his leaks, saying the "massive, pervasive" U.S. surveillance he disclosed violated the U.S. constitution and many statutes and treaties. He shrugged off the Obama administration's argument that the surveillance was permitted by secret court rulings, saying "the immoral cannot be made moral through the use of secret law."

He told meeting participants that he already has accomplished what he intended and thus sees no problem in agreeing to Putin's condition that he stop leaking.

"He said he hasn't damaged (U.S. interests) in the past, that the media frenzy wasn't his fault and that he has no intention to damage the U.S. government interests as he considers himself an American patriot," Nikonov told reporters.

Glenn Greenwald, the Guardian journalist who closely communicated with Snowden, has suggested the media organizations involved already had all the material Snowden wanted to make public. Greenwald indicated it was up to the newspapers what to publish and when.

Nikonov said that he expects the Kremlin to offer asylum to Snowden, and speakers of both houses of the Russian parliament, Sergei Naryshkin and Valentina Matviyenko, also quickly spoke in support of his plea.

While granting asylum to Snowden would further damage U.S.-Russian ties already strained by U.S. criticism of Putin's crackdown on the country's opposition and differences over Syria, such a move could allow Putin to portray Russia as a principled defender of human rights and openness, even though it allows its security agencies to monitor the Internet.

Some said the Kremlin may not be too concerned about upsetting Washington because relations are already at a freezing point.

"We may expect a new surge of anti-Russian campaigning in the U.S., but such surges have occurred regularly even without Snowden," said Alexei Pushkov, the Kremlin-connected chief of the foreign affairs committee in the lower house of parliament. "So there will be no dramatic change in the situation."

Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said Russia has yet to receive a new asylum request from Snowden and that Putin would continue to demand that Snowden stop leaking information.

It was unclear how long a decision could take. Anatoly Kucherena, a member of a Kremlin advisory body who attended the meeting, said it could take two to three weeks. But Putin's imprimatur could accelerate the process, as it did when French actor Gerard Depardieu was granted Russian citizenship in a matter of a few days.

Snowden got support from the top U.N. human rights official who urged nations to offer him the same international rights that all asylum seekers are due.

U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said all nations must "respect the internationally guaranteed right to seek asylum" and also are obliged to make any such determination "in accordance with their international legal obligations."

Pillay said in a statement that nations must respect the right to privacy and protect individuals like Snowden who reveal alleged large-scale surveillance programs.

She said the case raises concerns that surveillance without adequate safeguards to protect the right to privacy may infringe on basic rights such as freedom of expression.

In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the U.S. was "disappointed'" that Russia helped to facilitate what she termed a "propaganda platform" for Snowden.

"We are disappointed that Russian officials and agencies facilitated this meeting today by allowing these activists and representatives into the Moscow airport's transit zone to meet with Mr. Snowden despite the government's declarations of Russia's neutrality with respect to Mr. Snowden," Psaki said at a briefing.

She added that "we still believe that Russia has the opportunity to do the right thing and facilitate his return to the United States."

Although Friday's meeting left Snowden's fate still uncertain, it at least confirmed where he was; speculation had swirled that he had been spirited out of the country.

"We found for ourselves that he is real, he's no phantom," said Genry Reznik, a lawyer who participated in the meeting.

Movie Review: ?The Lone Ranger? As Reimagined by Tonto ...

3 popcorns

One choice can change many lives... Faith or Fate by John Ruggiero

TheLoneRanger2013PosterBy Michael S. Goldberger,?film critic

If I were to win the $434M Mega Power Rich Forever and it didn?t change me for the worse, I?d offer to pay your way to see director Gore Verbinski?s ?The Lone Ranger,? only because I think you might enjoy the curiosity. Otherwise, I?m quite hesitant to recommend you spend your own money, unless of course you won the $434M Mega Power Rich Forever.

Johnny Depp, who can be found in the thespic compendium under Actors, Phylum: Oddball, herewith indelibly, on big silver screen, indulgently affixes his signature. He brazenly utilizes his version of George W. Trendle and Fran Striker?s legend of The Lone Ranger as an opportunity to propagate his own ideas on truth and equality and, in a hip, 21st Century sort of way, does it justice.

Portraying Tonto, the iconic loyal companion, he festoons the wildly adventurous tale with a spectrum of moral indignation, from Native American rights to the oftentimes shameful collusion between government and overwhelmingly powerful, vested interests. Thus, sometimes, when a scene is overdone, we nonetheless agree that what it had to say certainly needed saying.

Happily, Messrs Verbinski and Depp, each of whom is also listed among the film?s producers, always stop short of tarnishing the fable, no matter how rowdy or determinedly political their permutation rants. If anything, they sanction the goody two shoes nature of Armie Hammer?s title character, poking a bit of fun but all the same emphasizing how truly difficult it is to stand straight amidst humankind?s winds of corruption.

But the movie is a bit long, often slow to make its point, and not terribly concerned with catering to whatever attention deficit its viewers may suffer. Such are the creative spoils of artists whose star accounts for profits measured in billions, especially when they?ve caught on to the notion that their medium can be used in a crusade against moneyed evil, whilst making themselves some good money in the bargain.

Although smartly lifting a rock on a lot of U.S. history, particularly as concerns railroads and Manifest Destiny, there is no sacrilege when it comes to The Lone Ranger. The thought is, as voiced in multifarious ways via Tonto?s often humorous incantations and outlandish pontifications, that grace is ordained by the spirits. The symbol must remain unblemished.

The Founding Fathers referred to it as inalienable rights. Or, as Victor Hugo is credited with saying after first espying parts of the Statue of Liberty being readied in Paris for shipping, ?The idea is everything.? Give or take a few creative liberties, these notions are iterated while delivering the tale?s lore in surprisingly faithful order, ensuring that the Lone Ranger rides again, the ?William Tell Overture? loudly heralding that inspiring fact.

But the irreversible truth is that many folks don?t care for civics lessons, let alone having them strewn through their bread and circus. So for that side of the aisle Depp and Verbinski frenetically activate an obvious admiration for silent film derring-do, evinced in seemingly endless runaway train action, with an unabashedly mugging Tonto invoking much of what Buster Keaton pioneered. Worked into a dizzying display of Rube Goldberg?s art, there is slugging and shooting aplenty.

And, reaffirming that you can?t have good guys without despicably etched villains, they?re delivered here with a powerfully odious, one-two punch. Tom Wilkinson is creepy nasty as Latham Cole, the railroad executive beyond redemption, linked in an unholy alliance with William Fichtner?s outlaw personified, Butch Cavendish. You don?t have to be an investigative reporter for ?The Washington Post? to grok the contemporary allusion.

But whereas we too often feel defenseless against government fat cats who simply can?t lap up enough collusive cream, hope springs eternal for the folks in this metaphoric tale of the Old West. With Tonto as his handler, front man, image maker and spiritual adviser, attorney John Reid, whose brother and fellow Texas Rangers were slaughtered by Butch and his gang, survives his wounds and morphs into the Lone Ranger.

However, while handsome and credible, albeit not quite the strapping presence Clayton Moore embodied in the TV series, this Lone Ranger is upstaged by his sidekick. Mr. Depp, as the brains behind the unalterable goodness Armie Hammer represents, makes no bones about it. Reid may be too good for his own good, and therefore needs the wise and crafty counsel of a disparaged Native American who has made an art of survival.

Tonto informs: ?Horse says you are spirit walker: a man who has been to the other side and returned? a man who cannot be killed in battle.? And then, essentially insinuating that sometimes fire must be fought with fire, he advises, ?There come a time when good man must wear mask.?

Rafael Nadal will bounce back for US Open, says coach

Rafael Nadal will bounce back for US Open, says coach (? AP)

Rafael Nadal will bounce back from his shock first-round exit at Wimbledon in time for the US Open next month, his coach insisted on Thursday.

The 27-year-old French Open champion suffered his earliest exit at a major when he was stunned by Belgium's Steve Darcis on the first day of Wimbledon.

His straight-sets defeat to Darcis, ranked 135th in the world, led to speculation about the impact of the clay-court season on a previous injury, an inflammation of the knee cap, which curtailed Nadal's 2012 campaign.

But his uncle and coach Toni has insisted that the 12-time Grand Slam champion will ease himself back into his training regime in time for the US Open, which begins on August 26.

"Rafa will come back. He has no fear of the (hard court) surface - he has nothing more to lose," Toni Nadal told SID, an AFP subsidiary, at the ATP tournament in Stuttgart.

"Currently Rafa is doing physical training, but no racquet workouts. The break is important - he has played enough."

According to his uncle, Nadal, who is at home in Mallorca, will return to the tour on August 5 when he plays at the Montreal Masters, then Cincinnati, which starts August 12, before the US Open in New York.

Prior to Wimbledon, Nadal had reached the final of all nine tournaments he had entered since his return from a seven-month injury lay-off, winning seven of them -- including his eighth French Open title and the Masters in Indian Wells.

7/9 New Bandits coach Troy Cordingley on returning to Buffalo, his two NLL championships and more

And that would be -- accordingly and he joins us here on WG I try to tell himself welcome this first of all morning our morning -- congratulations. And I I would just -- I -- my first question is how much did you want this job not I'm a new you're out of coaching at times you you know you might have jumped at a number of opportunities that. I think this is a special job for you in the idea of getting it would have been something pretty -- freedom. For sure. And let them. -- is that premier job head coaching job in the national costly and you know. When I was presented it to myself. I was pretty ecstatic in and isn't that right away. I misunderstood this the best job link right in your opinion is that. Well just because of defense says that the history of the franchise and the fans. You know. You. Has missed -- -- -- The way that they support the team in the way they get the players going. And you know whether. This is the French as this team. Has won since one a lot and you know. We need to get back to that to that spot. Victory Lane. They're having said that how much pressure comes with the job and I'm not. Trying to suggest that they didn't want to win in Toronto where you did win in Calgary where you did read how much pressure comes with the coaching job in buffalo because out. The history of the franchise and the expectations for this franchise. Well it's pressure yes but it put pressure that we look at it because you know make -- franchise. And and -- -- as a franchise that cares and in and and the biggest thing his position and say you know who they. Victories and and you know them. And they deserved victories so you know I look at as the pressure. And I honestly. It doesn't matter what you coach. You know there's always pressure to women -- the coaches things established. You know I'm I'm really looking forward to. To -- good pressure. Have you talked to any of the players since you're hired did so. What's your general message to the guys. I went on into the phone calls in the the meeting with the players as of yet. Will be -- and -- -- shortly but you know all my. It says an assistant coach -- five years. And the biggest thing is accountability. You know you have to be. Accountable for for all your actions and and you know the biggest thing is is we're we're going to be playing for the name on the front of the Jersey instead of aluminum. The one on the back so. There's some broken pieces -- like get them. You know I've gone through around the rosters and and things like that so. You know this piece there that that. I believe some can win this. Let's talk about more about the roster -- -- -- -- to -- -- coach randomly Jack what do you think. On the roster that you inherit at this point. Well I make. You know there's some guys. Some I noticed there was guys make well some where. You know he's 32 year old veteran. And he'd won -- -- players. Is leaking and they can play -- with our offense without the ball and is amazing that that you know. I'm creating space and and finding space. Hit the ball in front of the net very. You know some some goals. Defensively -- big size. Some of the guys. On this tenacity of guys make -- Brian who you know. OK that's five foot eight but you know he's going up against some big Bruton and whenever a lot of his battles so. You know there's there's there's some strength obviously there's some weaknesses. That we wanna change in the -- You know. That's what will be doing. You know you you know you mention the -- only talked about you know getting to Victory Lane and you know you're playing for the than the front of the Jersey -- the name on the back you know. It takes to win a championship in the NL you've been able to do it twice as a coach what does it take. Well it's it's you know I think a lot of takes effect that they'd be on the same page. 41. Me know when and where will all working everybody organizations working for that one goal and that's always encompassed in the the year. And you know it's a roller coaster ride you know doesn't matter. You know -- You're started facet of the keys or I'll I'll work with a roller coaster road right of the unity in the get a maintain focus can't get too -- can get to know. You know and you know they are saying is is. The welcome -- I don't and the will to compete in and you know if you've got that well and and you know. My believe there's. A lot of guys on the team and -- that will. You know hit it tends to -- lead you to success. The only -- cares about trying either you have a relationship with the general manager -- -- how much does that help. Approach having already established Bruney got the job that comfort zone with a guy above you. It's huge. You know all. I've always believed in that you win with good people and in the mount Sutton was just killed people and that would get people away from the rain continues just. You know people that you trust and then you know he was one of those guys that. Quite obviously trust the men and you know liquid I believe he -- me as well and and you know hum. It's not a vote. It's not a with Steve it's -- vote for the team and the goal is to get back to the champions cup and went so you know that's the biggest thing. Lou. You know everybody is on the same page and you know. You look toward that goal. Drug congratulations belatedly I'm getting the job and obviously we wish you the best of success in the minutes back in the class and hopefully win in the championship. Gentlemen thanks very much. This time I love coach but I two record that it's got to this year on WG.

Tom Ford "flattered" by Jay-Z tribute on 'Magna Carta Holy Grail' album

Fashion designer Tom Ford has said that he is "completely flattered" by Jay-Z's tribute to him on new album Magna Carta Holy Grail.

Jay-Z has included the song 'Tom Ford' on the tracklisting for his latest album, which received its official release yesterday (July 8).

On the track, the 'Empire State of Mind' star raps: "I don't pop Molly / I rock Tom Ford."

Ford, 51, told Billboard: "I am completely flattered. I mean, come on, who would not want a Jay-Z song named after them?"

Both Jay-Z and wife Beyonc? are known to be Tom Ford fans, with the former wearing one of the designer's suits in Justin Timberlake's 'Suit & Tie' video earlier this year.

Jay-Z's Magna Carta Holy Grail LP features collaborations with Justin Timberlake, Frank Ocean and Pharrell Williams.

Battles Not to Pick with Your Children - Scary Mommy

?

Before I actually became a parent, I held some delusion that I would be in control of the then-hypothetical children who would someday ?grow up under my roof. I think that delusion is perpetuated among the not-yet-parents community by people who blame parents for their kids? behavior in public. But every parent knows that children save their most mortifying, aberrant, crazy-ass tantrums and MTV-worthy behavior for public spaces and moments when their parents will be caught completely off-guard and vulnerable to it. Why waste a good tantrum on the quiet walls of home when the check-out line at Target has such a great built-in audience? Why take the vocal cords out for a joyride for your own empty family room when you can regale every single person at a restaurant with your cinematic screams ? but only after the meal order has been placed and before the food actually arrives? Children are brilliant, I tell you, and their genius is evil.

?

Eleven years into this parenting gig, I?ve learned that there are several areas in which I have zero control over my children, no matter what I or the child-free strangers on the street, in the airplane, or at Target believe. I?ve also learned that the sooner I understand and accept that I hold no dominion over these areas in my children?s lives, we will all be happier. I don?t often offer parenting advice because I?m no expert and I firmly believe that every child is different. But in the interest of saving someone else the pain, time, and energy, I present to you Three (Maybe Four) Battles Not to Pick with Your Children ? for your own mental health, if nothing else:

?

1. What and How Much They Eat.?You are definitely charged with offering your children healthy, balanced meals and with meting out less nutritious fare judiciously. That is never in question. But be aware that it is your child that will always determine if he or she will eat the meal you offer. You can?t force someone ? anyone, really ? to eat without extensive medical help. You can cajole, coax, threaten, and bribe, but you cannot make that child ingest that quinoa if he doesn?t want to do it. And here?s the bottom line:?you don?t want to, because you don?t want to make food a warzone for a child. My advice? You offer the good stuff. Whatever the child eats, he eats. But don?t make it a battle. You will end up miserable ? I guarantee it ? and any victory will be hollow, because I don?t know any child that has actually said, ?You?re right. I was wrong about that baked tilapia. Now I want to eat it every night!? No. Even if you get the kid to eat the damn fish, he?ll hate you for it. Keep offering, by all means, but don?t force and don?t take it personally. It?s not worth it.

?

2. When They Sleep.?You can enforce a bedtime, and you should. You will offer a wonderful sleeping arrangement, you will provide consistency, you will go through a bedtime production and routine worthy of an Oscar. But the truth is, you can?t make kids fall asleep. Sleep is only ever only on their terms. So losing your patience, demanding they go to bed, and pulling your hair out? It works against you, because how can someone fall asleep when her parent is irritated and angry with her? Be as zen as you can be when leading the rugrat back to bed for the umpteenth time, and remember: sometimes you have trouble falling asleep too. Children aren?t robots. Some nights they will struggle. In my house, with four kids scampering about, someone is always giving us a hard time about going to bed. The more we fight it, the longer it lasts. I now either tell the child he is free to stay awake with a book as long as he wants, as long as he stays in bed and doesn?t disrupt his brothers, or I embrace the moment and lie down with the hold-out and rub his back, repeating to myself that?someday I will miss this?(I do not always convince myself, but I try.)?Don?t get me wrong; I still lose it sometimes, but even as I do, I know I?m working against myself.

?

3. Where and When They Go Potty.?One of the hardest aspects of parenting for me thus far has been potty training, and the main reason is that no matter the method or how many times I have done it, it never fails to show me how little control I have in the matter. Even on my third child, I was humbled by the fact that he could have all the skills and know-how he needed, but I would still find myself bringing him home from preschool, letting him in the door, and then racing up the stairs after him like a crazy woman as I realized that he was heading for his bedroom carpet to relieve himself. Because he did. Every day. Somehow, he always caught me off guard and he always beat me up those stairs. He knew exactly what he needed to do to successfully use the potty, but he just didn?t want to, and there was not a dang thing I could do about it. That boy didn?t have but one accident at preschool the entire year, but he had an ?accident? at home almost every day. It was no accident. It was his little 3 year old self giving me a big middle finger and letting me know I was not the boss of him. Ah, threenagers.

?

4. I believe there is a fourth battle I will not try to win with my children, and that is?When to Have Sex for the First Time. However, as I have not crossed that bridge yet, I?m not willing to comment on it with the same level of confidence as the other three items. I only know that as with the other three categories, I can educate, instruct, and create an atmosphere that I hope will yield the result I hope for, but in the end, we?re talking about their bodies and their decisions. I have a feeling the other three rules will feel like child?s play, literally, when I get to that fourth doozy. Luckily, modern science has provided us with an excellent array of anti-anxiety medication to choose from, because I have a feeling I am going to need it.

Confusion on Snowden acceptance of Venezuela offer

MOSCOW (AP) ? The WikiLeaks secret-spilling site on Tuesday said NSA leaker Edward Snowden has not yet formally accepted asylum in Venezuela, trying to put to rest growing confusion over whether he had taken up the country's offer.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has offered asylum to Snowden and says his country received a request from the former NSA systems analyst. But Snowden, who is believed to be in a Moscow airport's transit zone, has applied for asylum in other countries as well, and it is not clear how easy it would be for him to travel to the Latin American country.

On Tuesday, a prominent Russian lawmaker tweeted that Snowden had accepted Venezuela's offer, then deleted the posting a few minutes later.

It was not possible to immediately reach Alexei Pushkov, the head of the Russian parliament's foreign affairs committee who has acted as an unofficial point man for the Kremlin on the Snowden affair.

But soon after the posting on his Twitter account disappeared, he sent another message saying his claim was based on a report from the state all-news television channel Rossiya 24, also known as Vesti.

The channel said Pushkov misunderstood its report on Maduro's comments Monday night during a meeting with Panama's president, which the anchorwoman introduced by saying "Venezuela has finally received an answer" from Snowden.

She then clarified that Maduro said Venezuela had received Snowden's official request and showed a clip of him saying in Russian voiceover that Snowden "should decide when to fly to Caracas, if he indeed has decided to come here."

WikiLeaks, which has been advising Snowden, said Tuesday on Twitter that Snowden had not formally accepted the Venezuelan offer, and that any decision on asylum would be announced by the "states concerned" and "then be confirmed by us."

Pushkov, however, followed up with a third tweet that essentially repeated his initial claim: "As Vesti 24 reported citing Maduro, Snowden accepted his offer of asylum. If this is so, then he considered this the safest option."

Pushkov had posted messages over the weekend encouraging Snowden to accept Venezuela's offer, signaling that the Kremlin was now anxious to be rid of him.

The Kremlin declined comment on Tuesday's developments.

Snowden, who revealed details of a U.S. intelligence program to monitor Internet activity, came to Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport on June 23 and was believed to be headed for Cuba. But he did not board that flight and has not been seen publicly since.

In his comments, Maduro did not say what process Venezuelan officials might use to follow up on Snowden's request. The presidents of Bolivia and Nicaragua have also said that Snowden was welcome in their countries.

For Snowden to leave for Venezuela, he would need the country to issue him travel documents and find a way to get there. The only direct commercial flight from Moscow stops in Havana.

The Moscow-Havana flight goes over Europe and the U.S., which could cause complications. Some European countries refused to allow Bolivian President Evo Morales to fly through their airspace on his way home from Moscow last week because of suspicions that Snowden was on his plane.

Bolivian Interior Minister Carlos Romero on Tuesday denounced what he called "act of aggression." Bolivia, backed by Nicaragua, Ecuador and Venezuela, called on the Organization of American States' permanent council to approve a declaration demanding that such an incident never be repeated.

Romero also called for apologies from European nations and an explanation of the July 2 incident.

Maduro said Monday it is perhaps the world's "first collective humanitarian asylum" with various countries saying "Come here!"

WikiLeaks later tweeted that "tomorrow the first phase of Edward Snowden's 'Flight of Liberty' campaign will be launched." It wasn't clear what it meant, and WikiLeaks did not immediately respond to requests for details.

Spotify for Windows Phone 8 update available now: drops beta, adds track scrubbing and more languages

Spotify for Windows Phone 8 update available now drops beta, adds track scrubbing and more languages

As teased by no less than Windows Phone exec Joe Belfiore earlier this morning, Spotify has dropped its beta learning plates. In the latest update, you'll get improvements to offline playlists (hopefully making them less temperamental), alongside more language support, with 19 of 'em now supported. Steeling itself to go up against the homemade Xbox Music (not to mention the entirely free Nokia Music), the full version also throws in track scrubbing -- something that was curiously missing from Spotify's early WP8 app. The 2MB update can be grabbed through your phone, or installed at the source link below.

Bin Laden wore cowboy hat ?to avoid detection?: Pakistani report

The compound where Osama bin Laden was killed in Abbottabad May 4, 2011. REUTERS/Faisal Mahmood

Osama bin Laden "trusted in Allah for his protection" but made sure to wear a cowboy hat on his walks around his compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, "to avoid detection from above." That's according to the blockbuster final report of a Pakistani commission that looked into the circumstances surrounding the May 2011 raid in which U.S. commandos killed the leader of al-Qaida. The report was obtained and published by Al-Jazeera English.

The so-called Abbottabad Commission comprised Pakistan's most senior supreme court judge, a retired inspector general of police, a retired army lieutenant general, and the director general of the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad. Its task was to investigate how bin Laden managed to live quietly in that garrison town ("a kilometer in a straight line from the Pakistan Military Academy," the report notes) and how U.S. special operations forces were able to conduct the covert raid without interference from Pakistan government forces. Key question: Was Pakistan's government guilty of incompetence or complicity in each case?

Bin Laden Dossier, page 55

It's a fascinating read, capturing the would-need-two-upgrades-to-be-merely-tense relations between the U.S. and Pakistan?a country U.S. officials call crucial to the war on terrorism but which needs to do more to crack down on Islamist extremists.

The independent commission's assessment of Pakistan's government is brutal. Among its findings:

--"The whole episode of the US assassination mission of May 2, 2011 and the Pakistan government's response before, during and after appears in large part to be a story of complacency, ignorance, negligence, incompetence, irresponsibility and possibly worse at various levels inside and outside the government," the report says starting on page 333.

--Dismantling the operations of both the CIA and Islamist extremist networks on Pakistani soil must be an "urgent national priority" (page 331).

--Civilian casualties from American drone strikes must be judged "deliberate and criminal" (page 328).

--The CIA stopped notifying Pakistan's government of high-value extremist targets on its territory in 2005 (page 325).

--It calls the bin Laden raid "illegal" and a symptom of America's "contemptuous disregard for Pakistan's sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity in the arrogant certainty of its unmatched military might" (page 305).

--But a more effective Pakistan government could have spared its people their "avoidable humiliation" (page 305).

--How did Pakistan's intelligence services miss the presence of the world's most wanted fugitive? "It was probably more a case of negligence, inefficiency and incompetence rather than complicity" (page 299).

Repeated entries note speculation that Pakistan abetted the raid with at least a wink-and-nod acceptance, but the commission found no evidence for that claim. On page 292, the report notes that Pakistan's air defense radars, which might have picked up the Navy SEAL team helicopters, were in "rest" mode because it was "not economical" to have them on constantly.

But among the most interesting nuggets in the report are the descriptions, based on interviews with bin Laden relatives living with him at the compound, of his life in hiding.

Bin Laden was "not fond of possessions" and moved into the house with just three summer outfits and three winter outfits. He also had a black jacket and two sweaters, the report said. Why didn't bin Laden have tougher protection? He "trusted in Allah for his protection" and had just two bodyguards.

Still, "when OBL moved about the Compound he wore a cowboy hat to avoid detection from above," the report said on page 41. When he felt unwell, he relied on "traditional Arab medicine." But whenever bin Laden "felt sluggish he would take some chocolate with an apple.?

He "did not discuss political matters with his wives." But Bin Laden "personally saw to the religious education of his grandchildren and supervised their play time, which included cultivating vegetable plots with simple prizes for best performances."

The witnesses said that the Americans made off with a hard disc that belonged to bin Laden?but also with what the report calls 20 gold ?biscuits? and two gold lockets with emeralds (page 40).

?They also took a purse that contained the will of Osama bin Laden,? the report says.

One of bin Laden's wives ?had previously read the will but did not wish to divulge the details. She said it was not political and pertained only to personal and family related matters. Other reports suggested that the will said his children should not seek the leadership of Al-Qaida.?

Asia stocks gain but China economy caution lingers

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rebounded and European shares continued a global rally Tuesday following positive U.S. economic news as nervousness about an imminent scaling back of the Federal Reserve's monetary stimulus eased.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index surged 2.6 percent to 14,472.90 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 1.5 percent to 4,881.70.

The move higher came a day after concerns over a sustained China slowdown prompted a selloff in Asia.

Other regional markets rose only moderately, reflecting continued caution. South Korea's Kospi inched up 0.7 percent to 1,830.35 and Taiwan's Taiex rose 1.1 percent to 7,971.18. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.5 percent to 20,683.01.

Mainland Chinese shares made small gains, with the Shanghai Composite up 0.4 percent to 1,965.45. The smaller Shenzhen Composite Index rose 0.4 percent to 892.93.

"Investors now worry about the economic outlook with no signs showing a recovery," said Li Jianfeng, an analyst at Caida Securities in Shanghai.

European markets extended the previous days's gains. Britain's FTSE 100 was up 1 percent to 6,515.02 and France's CAC 40 gained 0.7 percent to 3,851.17. The DAX in Germany was up 1 percent to 8,051.03.

Wall Street has been buoyed by stronger-than-expected U.S. hiring figures released Friday that suggested the world's biggest economy is on a firm footing. The strong jobs growth has outweighed jitters about the prospect that the Fed will soon start winding down its unprecedented support for the economy

Futures augured more gains on Wall Street. Dow futures were up 0.4 percent to 15,218 and S&P 500 futures rose 0.5 percent to 1,643.

Given the prevailing focus on the U.S., the key day this week will likely be Wednesday, when the minutes of the last policy meeting of the Fed are published. The Fed's chairman, Ben Bernanke, is also due to deliver a speech.

Benchmark crude for August delivery was down 3 cents to $103.11 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Among major currencies, the euro rose to $1.2872 from $1.2866 late Monday. The dollar rose to 101.24 yen from 100.90 yen.

Manny Ramirez set for latest comeback try in Texas

ROUND ROCK, Texas?A kinder, gentler Manny Ramirez says he feels no pressure and has no timeline in his latest attempt to get back to the big leagues.

The 41-year-old slugger was set to bat cleanup for Triple-A Round Rock on Sunday, three days after joining the Texas Rangers on a minor league contract.

? Ramirez seriously cuts off his hair

The 12-time All-Star who once forced his way out of Boston and was suspended for testing positive for banned drugs says he is "changed, made better" by his experiences.

Ramirez says he's happy to have "a chance to play the game I love." He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011 with Tampa Bay. A comeback attempt with Oakland last year failed, and he recently finished a three-month stint in Taiwan.
